Wayfinding Brochure
An informational brochure on the work of Margaret Calvert and the application of road signage as a method of wayfinding. Wayfinding refers to information systems that guide people through a physical environment and enhance their understanding and experience of the space. As an information designer, one of the key ways to implement this is through creating effective signage. A successful system of wayfinding is the UK road signage system. In 1963, Jock Kinnier and Margaret Calvert were asked to design signage for all national roads when the government became worried about the state of the nation’s roads – whose signs were a jumble of words, fonts and styles. They created sleek, modern signs and made to signal “a common language” with Europe. They were effective because the signs were colour-coded, easy to read at higher speeds, distinctive and uncluttered. They made one of the most universal, effective signage systems with simple, easy-to-understand pictograms. It was named the ‘biggest graphic design job’ ever.
